The Commission is an independent body, not a committee of any single council or institution — and its governance reflects that.
Around thirty member organisations sit at its heart, drawn from local government, business, academia, the NHS, emergency services, housing, farming, faith groups, energy cooperatives and the environment sector. Membership is by organisation, and more than one member from an organisation can take part. A Leadership Group of six members, across nature, community support, academia, energy and local government, coordinates the work between full Commission meetings, which bring the wider membership together bimonthly to share knowledge and explore opportunities for collaborative action.
It’s a deliberately broad table, on the basis that a challenge as wide as climate and nature recovery needs voices from across the economy and community, not just the usual specialists.
We’re also currently developing plans for a Youth Commissioners’ programme, to bring younger voices from across the county into this structure directly — more on that soon.
